“By migrating from BEA WebLogic to JBoss
Application Server, we are now able to bundle and embed a fully standards-based
J2EE container into our Maintenix™ application that delivers both improved
performance and unmatched technical support at a significantly lower cost.
In fact, we are saving a minimum of $15,000 per customer installation and
seeing 30% better overall performance.”
-Marc Lennox, Director of Technology, Mxi Technologies Ltd.
“For many software product businesses like ours, steep
embedded software fees eliminate all profit margins and license
constraints from these suppliers place onerous restrictions on our
customer base that really affect our ability to do business - our
move to use JBoss as our J2EE supplier has provided the right answer
to both of these issues”
-Jeff Cass, Chief Operations Officer, Mxi Technologies Ltd.

Company Overview: Mxi
Technologies Ltd. (www.mxi.com) specializes in software for aviation maintenance
management. Their core product, Maintenix™, manages the maintenance,
materials, and engineering activities for companies such as KLM Royal
Dutch Airlines, Aloha Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines, Air Mauritius, Executive
Jet Management, Boeing, Rolls-Royce, Dassault, Bombardier, the US Navy,
and other aviation and aerospace industry leaders. Mxi Technologies Ltd.
is based in Ottawa, Canada.
Project Overview: A previously solely dedicated
BEA WebLogic customer, Mxi Technologies Ltd. was interested in finding
a partner that could provide a simpler and more cost effective relationship
for bundling and embedding a J2EE 1.4 compliant container in their Maintenix™
product offering.
Challenge:
- Reducing their embedded technology cost of goods sold
- Finding a partner that offered an aligned business model for
distributing an embedded standards-based J2EE container
- Identifying a J2EE application that was current and compliant
with the latest J2EE and JDK standards
- Simplifying the migration process from BEA WebLogic
- Providing their customers equal or better scaling, performance
and stability than experienced previously with BEA WebLogic
Solution:
- JBoss Application Server with the LGPL open source
license (GNU Lesser General Public License)
- JBoss Certified Solution Partnership
- JBoss Subscription, a key component of the JBoss Certified
Partner Program. Includes access to technical support and migration
assistance from the experts behind the JBoss Enterprise Middleware
System (JEMS) suite of products
- Maintenix™ web application now uses JBoss Application Server,
Oracle Database, and Internet Explorer for Middleware, Database,
and Client application tiers respectively.
Results:
- Saved a minimum of $15,000 per customer installation by
embedding JBoss Application Server instead of BEA WebLogic
- Experienced approximately 30% better overall performance
and scalability with JBoss compared to BEA WebLogic
- Received excellent and unmatched technical support
from the JBoss Customer Support staff
- After failing in previous attempts to migrate to other
application servers, were able to migrate entire Maintenix™
application to JBoss Application Server in only 6 person months
(4 actual months)
- Simpler partner relationship with JBoss provides no-cost
licenses to embed JEMS products while ensuring that their customers
receive the quality of support they demand
