Through its experience in developing numerous solutions for its clients, Rivet Logic has developed open source contributions (what we call "rivets") that enable the creation of content-rich Web applications using best-of-breed content management systems, portal frameworks, and Web frameworks. In particular, we identified a strong need to provide seamless integration between JBoss Enterprise Portal Platform and enterprise-grade content management systems like Alfresco, and have developed two solutions to address this need – one focused on Web content and the other on enterprise document content. In particular, we address the need for organizations to use enterprise WCM platforms to manage Web content, and then publish content to a variety of delivery channels including those driven by JBoss EPP. In addition, we solve the need to easily and securely access external document management repositories from content-centric collaboration applications running on JBoss EPP.

Crafter rivet fills the need in the open source WCM landscape for a high performance, enterprise-grade content delivery framework that consumes content published from WCM platforms like Alfresco and serves up that content through a variety of presentation-tier frameworks, including the JBoss Enteprise Portal Platform. Crafter is built from the ground up for high performance, scalability, and reliability, and provides both in-process Java APIs and REST-based APIs for building content-rich Web applications. In addition, Crafter supports out-of-the-box integration with external search, e-commerce, SSO, and social networking services, among others. The Alfresco Webscript Portlet rivet (AWPr) provides a straightforward way for JBoss EPP developers to access an Alfresco document management repository through a JSR-286 portlet. In contrast to using Alfresco’s out-of-the-box Web script portlet, AWPr alleviates the need for having to deploy all of Alfresco inside the portal and thus allowing for better scalability and flexibility. AWPr supports single sign-on across the EPP and Alfresco, and is highly configurable allowing developers to multiple different instances of a document management portlet. More information about AWPr can be found at http://wiki.rivetlogic.com/display/AWPr/Home.

Crafter rivet has been used as the basis for many enterprise Web and portal applications including the two implementations for which Rivet Logic has won JBoss Innovation Awards in 2008 & 2009 -- Kaplan Test Prep & Admissions (2008) and Harvard Business Publishing (2009). The case study for HBP can be found at http://www.rivetlogic.com/ casestudies/hbp-wcm-case-study.pdf.

Similarly, AWPR has been used on numerous portal implementations. Most recently, AWPr has been used in the Clinical Research Information Exchange (CRIX) implementation to streamline clinical trials in the pharmaceutical sector. The case study for CRIX can be found at http://www.rivetlogic.com/casestudies/crix-case-study.pdf.
